BASHBOOMPOW! RECOMMENDS – Darth Maul: Apprentice

A Star Wars fan film worth watching? For real?

Absolutely, yes.

‘Stupid reverse-camoflage!’

Clocking in at just under 18 minutes, this is a superbly produced slice of fan filmmaking. Chronicling the final test of Apprentice Maul, it’s best watched on the terms of something you might (and inevitably will) see at a Disney Park, as it’s basically a stunt show. It’s got inventive, extensive and exciting lightsabre duels, great use of location, and committed performances from the whole team involved, with genuinely decent effects (the ‘sabres are faithfully and fantastically recreated) and Maul himself – Ben Schamma – manages to wring more emotion and pathos out of the character than Ray Park mustered in TPM.

The galaxy’s favorite hipster pop group

Some of the larger-scaled CGI is only about the level of OK-TV standards, and The Emporer sounds kind of like an impression, but as a one-shot fan addition to the Maul Mythology it’s a detailed, impressive and fairly intense little film, and definitely worth checking out.
