As studios desperately clamber for properties from our childhoods to reintroduce to a whole generation of new ones, the Masters of the Universe reboot is a project that seemingly won’t go away. This is in spite of the fact that almost everything about the franchise is patently ridiculous – the actual episodes of the animated series that spawned it are virtually unwatchable, the previous Dolph Lundgren-starring movie adaptation was uniformly terrible (and also mined the ‘bring the characters from their incredible homeworld to boring old Earth’ trope, last seen in Thor), and it has the most camp and comical villain posed as a serious threat in all of cartoon lore.
But rumours of the project pushing forward have circulated for a while, even with credible names like Joe Cornish and Rian Johnson linked, and it seems a director shortlist has now been made. The four guys being approached to take audiences (kicking and screaming) back to Eternia are:
Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2)
Mike Cahill (Another Earth)
Harold Zwart (The Karate Kid)
Chris McKay (editor – The Lego Movie)
Nothing about that list of names or this project gives me any kind of hope that it’ll result in a worthwhile feature but… whatever, it’s a thing from my youth* so there is precisely 0% chance I won’t watch it. Cringe(r).
